Wherever You Are ... Be All There

Was visiting my grandmother today. She has dementia ... Our repeating conversation reminded me of the importance of being present.

It went something like this ...

Her: I haven't seen you in a while.
Me: I know (smiling and giving a look that says I'm sorry.)
Her: What's your name?
Me: Tina
Her: I like you.
Me: I like you, too! (Smiling)
Her: Are you married?
Me: Yes.
Her: What's your husband's name?
Me: Paul
Her: I haven't seen you in a while.
Me: I know (smiling and giving a look that says I'm sorry.)
Her: What's your name?
Me: Tina
Her: I like you.

.... And on and on we go while playing as many hands of rummy as we can fit in.

I stay present with her the entire time. I answer each of her questions as if it were the first time I heard it...and always with a big smile.

It is difficult to see a loved one this way, but I think it is a good reminder for us in our daily lives with our husbands and children and friends to try to be present wherever we are.

I think it is easy to be present with my grandma because I don't see her every day. So I really make the effort when I do. But I think I could use some improvement when it comes to being present with the people I see every day...most notably hubby and kids.
How about you? Can you relate?
