How to nip negativity in the bud in your marriage

Have you ever noticed when you buy a new car that you now see that car everywhere? Did the streets suddenly get flooded with that car the day you bought yours? No. You simply noticed them because that make and model was now on your radar.

The same theory works in marriage. If all we do is focus on the negative, that is where our mental radar will stay. You have the power to change your focus.

Make a commitment to start looking for the things your spouse does right. Start small if you have to. Speak these thoughts to your spouse. For example:

"Thank you for emptying the dishwasher."
"Thank you for going to work for our family today."
"Thank you for taking out the trash."

Also look for his good qualities. Is he smart, helpful, funny? There are some. You did marry the guy, after all! Find at least 10 and write them on a notecard to remember when you are feeling frustrated.

If you are having trouble finding good, ask around. Ask your kids, your mom or a friend. They will help you get on the right track.
