Don't Let Unmet Expectations Kill Your Marrige

Some food for thought today. Many times in marriage, we might feel disappointed by something the other spouse did or did not do. For example, Mary loved receiving flowers from her husband, but he did not buy them often because he thought they were expensive. This hurt her feelings. Or maybe Stan is highly annoyed that his wife is always late. This makes him feel disrespected.

These seem like reasonable requests -- to receive flowers sometimes and to be on time. But the fact is that they are unrealistic expectations, because they are not traits the other spouse has.

You have a choice if you find yourself in marriage with unmet expectations. You can dwell on the one trait of your spouse that drives you nuts, or you can choose to let it go and focus on all of the other positive traits that your spouse has.

I know this might sound harsh, but really, it's about maturity. I believe God created marriage to grow us into the people he wants us to be. Not necessarily so we could be pleased and happy every second. If our marriage is healthy otherwise, maybe we can let this one little thing go!
