Follow These Three Steps to Reach Your Health and Fitness Goals
As I work with my clients on making positive changes in their life, we sometimes stumble upon resistance -- even when it is something they say they want -- like a healthier body.
Part of the reason they may be struggling is because they are having trouble getting from the desire to make a change to actually developing the habits to bring those goals to fruition. It is a process.
Motivation is your reason for wanting to make a change. Maybe you have a trip coming up and you want to lose a couple of pounds. Or maybe you want to have more energy to keep up with your children.
So, motivation gets you started on your journey, But unfortunately, motivation alone is not enough. It doesn't last long, and it fluctuates depending on the circumstance. So, you might be motivated to decline dessert if you have a trip coming up, but what will motivate you after the trip?
Motivation helps you make decisions that are more disciplined. That is good! That is one step closer to your goal.
Discipline is the stage after motivation and just before your good choices become a habit. Discipline is when we are forcing ourselves to do something we might not really want to do, like eating healthy or exercising. So it requires a thought process and a decision. It takes discipline to develop a habit.
The goal is to get to making good choices for your body a habit. Habit is when something becomes so routine you don’t even think about it -- like brushing your teeth.
For me, that habit is getting up at 5 a.m. to spend time with God and exercise before everyone else gets up. I was motivated first to lose a couple of pounds, then I disciplined myself to go to bed on time and wake up early, and now I have a habit.
So, the process is to discover what your motivation is, then make intentional decisions, so you can become more disciplined and keep at it until you develop healthy habits to get you to your goal.
I help my clients work on this so they can achieve their goals. Private message me if you'd like to join my November Health and Fitness group! We can get started moving you from motivation to habits.
